What you keep when you file
St. Albert is a higher-income area, with a median family income of $140,629 against $114,600 for Alberta, so a lot of people have assets to protect.
People often put off dealing with debt because they are afraid of losing what they own. With a consumer proposal, your home, car, savings and other assets are protected while you repay part of what you owe.
Even in a bankruptcy, Alberta law lets you keep up to $40,000 of home equity, one vehicle, your household goods and your work tools.
Whether you own or rent, and regardless of how much you owe, the same protections apply. Your trustee will explain all your options.

Your debt relief options in St. Albert
Consumer proposals and bankruptcy are government regulated. Once you file, wage garnishment and collection calls stop.

Debt relief
Not sure which route fits? We look at what you owe, your income and your assets, then explain the options in plain terms. The call is free, and there is no obligation to proceed.

Consumer proposal
Combine what you owe into one fixed monthly payment, with the total reduced to what you can afford. Interest stops, and you keep your assets, including your home.

Bankruptcy
For debt that has become unmanageable, bankruptcy clears most of what you owe and gives you a fresh start. Alberta’s exemptions let you keep some of your property.

Frequently Asked Questions
You likely do, if you owe under $250,000 outside your mortgage and have regular income. The test is whether you can afford a monthly payment once your essentials are covered, and whether your offer beats what creditors would collect in a bankruptcy. Your trustee works the figures out with you first.
Alberta protects up to $40,000 of equity in your principal residence, one of the higher exemptions in the country. If your equity sits below that, the home is safe in a bankruptcy. If it is above, a consumer proposal usually lets you keep the home and repay creditors over time instead.

Yes. The day your trustee files, a stay of proceedings under the Bankruptcy and Insolvency Act stops wage garnishments and most creditor actions. The garnishment stops right away.
In a consumer proposal, no. You keep your assets and repay part of what you owe, so the bankruptcy exemption limits never apply. In a bankruptcy, Alberta protects a set amount of equity in your home, one vehicle and your household goods.
Yes. The firm is a federally regulated Licensed Insolvency Trustee practice. No other professional in Canada can file a consumer proposal or bankruptcy for you, or use a government filing to stop interest, fees and collection calls.
A first consultation can happen within a day or two. Once you decide to file, the paperwork moves quickly, and protection from creditors starts the moment your file is submitted. Most people are filed within two to three weeks of their first call.
